White House Can’t Answer What Biden’s ‘Top Domestic Priority’ Is
During Tuesday’s press conference, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was unable to answer what President Biden’s “top domestic priority” is, following conflicting comments from the president on whether his primary focus would be fighting inflation or passing a federal law allowing abortions.
“The Court got Roe right nearly 50 years ago, and I believe Congress should codify Roe once and for all,” Biden said earlier Tuesday, adding that if Democrats keep the House and Senate then “The first bill that I will send to the Congress will be to codify Roe v. Wade.”
Fox News reporter Peter Doocy noted that Biden’s comments appeared to conflict with his previous statements on inflation.
“What is President Biden’s top domestic priority now? Is it inflation or is it abortion?” Doocy asked.
“The President is going to continue to talk about issues that matter to the American people, and abortion is one of them. A majority of the American people disagree with the decision that — that the Supreme Court made — the Dobbs decision. That is — a majority of the people disagreed with that,” Jean-Pierre responded. “When it comes to the economy, the President has made it very, very clear. When it comes to inflation, it is the — his number-one economic priority, and he is doing everything that he can to make sure that we lower prices for the American people.”
“And you just said it’s ‘his number-one economic priority,’” Doocy noted. “We’ve heard the President say inflation is his top domestic priority, but now he’s saying, come next year, his first bill would be abortion related. So is his number-one domestic priority abortion or is it inflation?”
“Well, let’s not forget what the President has done the last 19 months. He has made the economy his top priority,” Jean-Pierre said, again not answering what Biden’s “top domestic priority” is.
Jean-Pierre then pointed to Biden’s American Rescue Plan as evidence of what Biden has done for the economy, despite it being widely seen as a main factor that led to the ongoing inflation crisis.
