On Friday, former President Donald Trump addressed a report from The Washington Post that cited anonymous sources to claim that the FBI raided Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home searching for documents that contained information on nuclear weapons, saying the report was a “hoax.”
“Nuclear weapons issue is a Hoax, just like Russia, Russia, Russia was a Hoax, two Impeachments were a Hoax, the Mueller investigation was a Hoax, and much more,” Trump posted on Truth Social Friday morning. “Same sleazy people involved. Why wouldn’t the FBI allow the inspection of areas at Mar-a-Lago with our lawyer’s [sic], or others, present. Made them wait outside in the heat, wouldn’t let them get even close – said ‘ABSOLUTELY NOT.’ Planting information anyone? Reminds me of a Christofer [sic] Steele Dossier!”
On Thursday night, The Washington Post released a report saying that anonymous sources “familiar with the investigation” told the outlet the FBI raided Trump’s home in search for “Classified documents relating to nuclear weapons.”
“The people who described some of the material that agents were seeking spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation,” The Washington Post continued. “They did not offer additional details about what type of information the agents were seeking, including whether it involved weapons belonging to the United States or some other nation. Nor did they say if such documents were recovered as part of the search.”
The report noted that material “about nuclear weapons is especially sensitive and usually restricted to a small number of government officials, experts said. Publicizing details about U.S. weapons could provide an intelligence road map to adversaries seeking to build ways of countering those systems. And other countries might view exposing their nuclear secrets as a threat, experts said.”
During a press conference on Thursday, Attorney General Merrick Garland said that he personally approved the search warrant on Trump’s home and that the Justice Department was moving to unseal the warrant.
“I personally approved the decision to seek a search warrant in this matter,” Garland said. “Second, the department does not take such a decision lightly. Where possible, it is standard practice to seek less intrusive means as an alternative to a search and to narrowly scope any search that is undertaken.”
“The Justice Department has filed a motion in the southern district of Florida to unseal a search warrant and property receipt relating to a court-approved search that the F.B.I. conducted earlier this week,” Garland said. “The department filed the motion to make public the warrant and receipt in light of the former president’s public confirmation of the search, the surrounding circumstances, and the substantial public interest in this matter.”
