Republican politicians who sided with Democrats to impeach former President Donald Trump over the January 6th attack on the United States Capitol are feeling the repercussions on the campaign trail. Nine of the 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump are “already facing primary challenges – and some of them may have a very hard time holding on to their seats” reports Fox News.
During his speech at the annual Conservative Political Action Committee (CPAC) conference in February, Trump delivered a fiery message: “Get rid of them all” he said of the Republicans who voted to impeach him. “Instead of attacking me and, more importantly, the voters of our movement, top establishment Republicans in Washington should be spending their energy in opposing Biden, Pelosi, Schumer and the Democrats.”
Perhaps the most high-profile Republican spat against President Trump was with former vice president Dick Cheney’s daughter and Wyoming Representative, Liz Cheney. Liz Cheney was the House Republican conference chair when she voted to impeach Trump. Cheney had a long-standing history of criticism against Trump.
After the impeachment vote, Cheney was “eventually deposed from her leadership post but still faces a horde of at least eight primary challengers aiming to remove her from office” reports Fox News. Wyoming State Senator Anthony Bouchard says he has surpassed over $500,000 fundraising against Cheney.
Other Republican candidates in the fight for their seat against Trump allies are Rep. Tom Rice of South Carolina, Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler of Washington, Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, Rep. Dan Newhouse of Washington, Rep. Anthony Gonzalez of Ohio, Rep. Fred Upton from Michigan, Rep. Peter Meijer of Michigan and Rep. David Valadao of California. Representative John Katko of New York also voted with Democrats to impeach Trump but does not yet have an announced primary challenger.
