Report: At least 24 injured, one dead in shooting at Dumas car show
Two men were to have opened fire at each other while bullets hit several bystanders
In what police describe as a gang shooting, as of this reporting, one person is dead and twenty-four people, including children, have been wounded at a shooting at a car show in Dumas, Arkansas. See the video embedded in the msn.com article. The shooting took place about 90 miles southeast of Little Rock, at about 7:30 p.m. local time, according to Arkansas State Police.
Gunfire was described to have swept across a crowd attending a local car show. Keith Finch, Dumas’ chief of police, told ABC News that children, including two under the age of 2, were among those injured in the shooting, but did not have a specific number. Organizers for the event told ABC News that the six children were injured but are “doing OK.” Preliminary information suggests the shooting was the result of a gang-related fight that spilled into a public area and not a random act. Detectives are continuing their investigation, a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation told ABC News.
Finch said police have a person of interest in custody but continue to investigate whether more people may have been involved. The Arkansas State Police is continuing to assist the Dumas Police Department in an ongoing investigation. In addition to the person in custody, a search is continuing today for others who may have been firing into the crowd of people on Saturday, March 19th.
Special Agents of the state police Criminal Investigation Division have worked through the night interviewing victims and witnesses. State troopers assigned to the Highway Patrol Division have been assisting Dumas police officers restore calm to the community and securing the crime scene along U.S. Highway 65 which runs through the center of the southeast Arkansas town.
According to a CBS News report, two people got into a gunfight during a car show that’s part of an annual community event in a small southeast Arkansas town. A person who left the scene of the Saturday evening shooting has been arrested on unrelated charges and is being questioned about the shooting. “All we know at this time, there was (sic) two individuals that got in a gunfight,” Agent Bryant said at a Sunday afternoon news conference. The car show is part of a community event held each spring called Hood-Nic, which is short for a neighborhood picnic. The Hood-Nic Foundation says on its website that its mission is to “rebuild, reunite, and respond to the needs of the youth in our communities.”
