During a new interview on the “Pod Save America” podcast, former President Barack Obama (D) said that Democrats “spend enormous amounts of time and energy and resources” on former President Trump instead of addressing on Americans’ interests like the inflation crisis.

“Well, the thing that I think sometimes we seem to make a mistake on is [Trump’s] behavior can be so outrageous,” Obama claimed. “And now, folks who try to copy him and his outrageous behaviors, get a lot of attention. And so we join that game. And we spend enormous amounts of time and energy and resources pointing out the latest, crazy thing he said, or you know, how rude or mean, you know, some of these Republican candidates behaved.”

“That’s probably not something that, in the minds of most voters, override their basic interests: Can I pay the rent? What are gas prices? How am I dealing with childcare, et cetera. Right? And I think we saw in 2016, understandably, because we hadn’t seen some of that behavior before, we thought, well— you know,” he added.

Gas prices are currently about 50% higher than they were when President Biden took office in January 2021, and over the last year prices have risen 8.2% overall as inflation has reached record levels.

Due to the record-breaking inflation rate, the real wages of American workers have decreased nearly 4% over the last year, according to a report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“Real average hourly earnings decreased 3.0 percent, seasonally adjusted, from September 2021 to September 2022,” the report said. “The change in real average hourly earnings combined with a decrease of 0.9 percent in the average workweek resulted in a 3.8-percent decrease in real average weekly earnings over this period.”
