McCarthy Destroys CNN For Saying ‘Open Border’ Is A Talking Point: ‘11,000 People Came Across Illegally’ In Last 24 Hours

On Monday, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy slammed CNN while speaking with reporters after the left-wing network said claims that the United States’ southern border is open was a “talking point.”

The news comes as Fox News reported that day that sources from Customs and Border Protection said that they encountered approximately 11,000 migrants in the last 24 hours attempting to illegally cross the southern border, which they said was the “single highest day” ever.

McCarthy called out CNN blogger Manu Raju about the situation while talking to reporters on Capitol Hill about the looming government shutdown.

“CNN referred to yesterday that an ‘open border’ is a talking point,” he said. “Well, we just set a new record of 11,000 people came across illegally. The record was just Friday, a few days before, of 10,000.”

McCarthy said that the media needed to begin accurately reporting on the border crisis and that Republicans want border security to be a primary issue as they address government funding.

McCarthy’s comments come shortly after border officials revealed that more than 232,000 migrants attempted to illegally cross the southern border in August, the highest number ever recorded for that month, according to new data from Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

“CBP’s total encounters along the Southwest border in August were 232,972,” a press release from CBP said. “Recidivism following the end of the Public Health Order under Title 42 has significantly decreased. Among CBP’s 232,972 overall encounters along the Southwest border in August 2023, 11% involved individuals who had at least one prior encounter in the previous 12 months, compared to an average one-year re-encounter rate of 14% for fiscal years 2014 – 2019 and a repeat encounter rate of 35% in August of 2022.”
