The owner of a New York City bar was arrested for defying coronavirus restrictions and providing indoor service past the city’s deadline, the Associated Press reports.
Deputies arrested Danny Presti, the co-owner of Mac’s Public House on Staten Island Tuesday after a sting in which plainclothes officers went inside and ordered food and beverages, the city sheriff’s office said.
The bar is located in an area designated by Governor Andrew Cuomo as an “orange zone” because of soaring COVID-19 cases, and was therefore not supposed to be serving patrons indoors.
But, the owners declared the bar an “autonomous zone” in attempts to combat the restrictions, continuing to serve and operate past the 10 p.m. curfew for restaurant service in the city.
As a result, the restaurant has been fined thousands of dollars.
According to a release from Sheriff Joseph Fucito, deputies went inside – undercover – Tuesday and ordered food in exchange for a mandatory $40 “donation.” Uniformed deputies then went in and issued tickets for state and city violations.
Presti was uncooperative and thus, charged with obstruction of governmental administration in addition to the charges from unauthorized food and beverage service, the sheriff said.
One of the bar’s attorneys told the Staten Island Advance that “these sheriff’s officers are ‘wannabe’ cops. This is what happens when little people get a little power.”
