Iran Rejects Biden’s Proposal to Partially Lift Sanctions Before Even Officially Offered
The proposal requires Iran to reverse its 20 percent uranium enrichment activity, as well as halt its use of advanced centrifuges.
The Biden administration is preparing to “work” with Iran, but the regime is showing just who holds the cards with its reluctant response. While Biden’s team puts together a new proposal to partially lift sanctions on Iran in exchange for the regime to reverse some of its nuclear deal violations, Politico reports the regime rapidly rejected any potential offer.
The proposal requires Iran to reverse its 20 percent uranium enrichment activity, as well as halt its use of advanced centrifuges. Foreign Desk News notes this proposal diverges “from the Biden administration’s previous stance that the U.S. would not relieve any sanctions prior to the regime’s full compliance with the JCPOA.”
Former President Trump pulled out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, known as the Iran nuclear deal or Iran deal in 2018 due to Iran’s noncompliance. Joe Biden touted entering back into the agreement during his presidential campaign. Even before Biden was elected, Iran’s Ayatollah publicly expressed disinterest in cooperating with Biden or the United States.
Iran “continues to remain firm in is demand that all sanctions be lifted prior to its reversal of any JCPOA violations.” A tweet by the Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republican of Iran to the UN Tuesday stated, “no proposal is needed for the US to rejoin the JCPOA…it only requires a political decision by the US to fully and immediately implement all of its obligations under the accord and abide by UNSCR 2231.”
Media outlet Aljazeera reported a cabinet speech Wednesday by Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani, which “referenced President Biden’s stance on Trump’s ‘maximum pressure’ strategy asking, ‘Do you agree that Trump was a terrorist? If you don’t, then all your talk is invalid. If you do, then you shouldn’t continue his action for one more second.”
