During Democrat President Joe Biden’s second State of the Union address on Tuesday night, he tried to argue that the border crisis is improving even though illegal immigration is at record high levels.

Biden’s comments came as illegal immigration continues to soar to new record highs with border officials encountering 251,487 migrants attempting to illegally cross the southern border in December 2022. The numbers for January 2023 have not yet been released.

December’s numbers, combined with the first two months of fiscal year 2023, set the United States on track to have close to 3 million illegal immigrant encounters at the southern border this year, by far the highest ever recorded. The number would beat the previous record set in fiscal year 2022, when 2,378,944 illegal immigrants were encountered by border officials – which was also the first time that exceeded 2 million.

“We now have a record number of personnel working to secure the border, arresting 8,000 human smugglers and seizing over 23,000 pounds of fentanyl in just the last several months,” Biden said. “Since we launched our new border plan last month, unlawful migration from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela has come down 97%.”

“If you won’t pass my comprehensive immigration reform, at least pass my plan to provide the equipment and officers to secure the border,” Biden claimed, even though Democrats controlled Congress during the time illegal immigration has been soaring and his immigration legislation has been criticized for not effectively enhancing border security. “And a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers, those on temporary status, farm workers, and essential workers.”

Biden’s comments were widely mocked since illegal immigration has surged sharply since he took office due to his open border policies. For example, former acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf responded to Biden’s claims by tweeting: “Biden talks about seizing thousands of pounds of fentanyl like it’s a success.”

“Perhaps he missed the testimony today that the fentanyl killing 100,000 Americans per year is being snuck across the border, making the cartels billions of dollars of income,” Wolf added.
