A moderate Democrat who served with the NYPD for 22 years has won the Democratic Primary for New York City’s Mayoral race. 60-year-old Eric Adams was a vocal opponent of the “defund the police” movement during his campaign. “If Black lives really matter, it can’t only be against police abuse. It has to be against the violence that’s ripping apart our communities” said Adams the night of the primary.
If elected, Adams will be the second Black mayor of the liberal city where Democrats outnumber Republicans 7 to 1. “Now we must focus on winning in November so that we can deliver on the promise of this great city for those who are struggling, who are underserved, and who are committed to a safe, fair, affordable future for all New Yorkers,” said Adams.
Adams is against the “defund the police” movement and said in May after a shooting in Times Square wounded three people, including a 4-year-old girl in Time Square, “we’re not going to recover as a city if we turn back time and see an increase in violence, particularly gun violence.”
The results finally came two weeks after voting for the primary ended in a field of five candidates. The Associated Press called the race for Adams who narrowly defeated former sanitation commissioner Kathryn Garcia by 8,426 votes.
Also on Tuesday, New York City’s Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a “disaster emergency” on gun violence in New York and issued an executive order to expedite funding to help with what he referred to as a new “epidemic.”
Cuomo tweeted about his initiative, “Gun violence is a public health crisis, and we must treat it like one. This declaration will allow us to give this crisis the full attention & resources it deserves.” He also pledged 138 million dollars for the initiative.
