On Tuesday, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) slammed Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas during a hearing on the DHS’s budget and the failure of border security plans.
“If it’s a priority, how did we let four or five million people into this country in a little more than two years?” Johnson asked.
“Mr. Secretary, you ought to resign,” Johnson said.

Johnson is one of many members of Congress who has called for Mayorkas to resign over the illegal immigration crisis at the border.
Last month, for example, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) called for Mayorkas’ resignation during an exchange with the Homeland Security Secretary during which he revealed Mayorkas’ lack of knowledge on the border crisis.
Cruz began by getting Mayorkas to admit that illegal immigration was at its lowest level in 2020, but surged to a record high the next year.
“Let’s look at CBP encounters … it drops to the lowest level. Then boom, what happens? You show up!” Cruz said. “And that red line is you! That red line is Joe Biden! And you’re claiming nothing happened, oh gosh, this was here before us. No! You made the decision to allow this!”
Cruz continued by getting Mayorkas to admit that he did not even know how many migrants died attempting to illegally cross the border in 2022.
“Of course you don’t! I know how many died, 853!” Cruz said. “You go back to 1998, you see it’s consistently between 300 to 400… Suddenly 2021. What happens? You get in office!”
