On Thursday, federal law enforcement officials arrested 21-year-old Massachusetts Air National Guard member Jack Teixeira in connection with the leaking of classified U.S. military documents.
Dozens of classified U.S. documents were allegedly posted on an online Discord server by Teixeira several weeks ago. The documents allegedly contained U.S. intelligence on the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the governments of several close U.S. allies.
The FBI announced the news in a statement.
“Today, the FBI took 21-year-old Jack Douglas Teixeira into custody without incident at a residence in North Dighton, Massachusetts, for his alleged involvement in leaking classified U.S. government and military documents,” the statement said. “Since late last week, the FBI has aggressively pursued investigative leads, and today’s arrest exemplifies our continued commitment to identifying, pursuing, and holding accountable those who betray our country’s trust and put our national security at risk.”
BBC News posted aerial footage of the arrest on Twitter.
As reported by the outlet, “The arrest happened in Dighton, a town of 8,000 people about an hour to the south of Boston.”
“Footage of the arrest shows a young man, believed to be Mr Teixeira, walking backward towards armed FBI officers with his hands raised before he is handcuffed and led to a car,” BBC News added.
